Your Wealthsimple return, measured properly
Wealthsimple gives you a balance and a percentage. It will not tell you whether your ETFs kept up with XIC or VFV, and it will not separate what your contributions earned from what your timing earned. Capitally computes both — time-weighted return, which strips out the effect of when you added money, and money-weighted return (XIRR), which measures what your own cashflows actually made — then benchmarks either one against the index you pick.
Contribution by holding shows which position moved the number, drawdowns show what it cost to get there, and FX attribution splits the Canadian-dollar gain on a US listing from the currency move underneath it.

A Wealthsimple footprint is rarely one account: a TFSA, an RRSP, an FHSA opened for a first home, a non-registered account for everything past the contribution room, sometimes a margin balance and some crypto beside them. Wealthsimple lists each one separately and leaves the arithmetic to you.

Dividend income across every account
Wealthsimple pays a distribution into the account that earned it and moves on. Capitally attributes every payment to the holding behind it, converts it to your base currency at that date's rate, and turns the history into yield on cost, dividend growth and a forecast of what is coming — per holding, per account and across the whole portfolio.
Reinvested distributions count as money you contributed rather than market gains, so a DRIP-heavy TFSA stops flattering its own return. Income from the non-registered side stays separated from the registered accounts where it is not taxable, which is the split that matters when the T5 arrives.

Frequently asked questions
TWR judges the strategy, MWR judges your result as an investor. Time-weighted return strips out when you added or withdrew money, which makes it the fair one to compare against a benchmark. Money-weighted return — also called IRR — includes your cashflow timing, so it tells you what the portfolio actually did for you.
Capitally computes both, plus ROI, for every account and for the whole portfolio, and any of them can be discounted by a benchmark for a real or excess return. Calculating returns has the worked examples.
All three, and three more besides: FIFO, LIFO, HICO (highest cost first), LOCO (lowest cost first), Manual specific-lot identification, and Average Cost Basis with Asset or Asset+Account pooling.
